The words “Baptism” and “Christening” mean the same and have been used for centuries.  

From the early days of Christianity, adults and children have been baptised. It’s a sign that they will try to live in love and peace as Jesus did. When children are baptised, the parents and Godparents make that commitment on behalf of the child. The child can make that decision for themselves when they are “Confirmed” at a later time.

Baptism is a public commitment and usually takes place during the main Sunday service, but other arrangements can be made if you prefer. 

We are all part of God’s inclusive love and so at St James the Great and All Saints’ we are pleased to baptise children of unmarried parents, single parents and from parents in same-sex relationships.  

Baptising children 

Baptism is a beautiful way to give thanks for your child, to welcome them into your family and into the wider community, and to celebrate together.

It’s a time to choose Godparents - those people you trust most completely to be there for your child, come what may, and show them how much you value their love and friendship. 

​Your child is precious to you and precious to God. You want the very best for them, and so does God. You want them to make right choices in life, for themselves and for others. And we all need help to make the right choices! 

Having your child baptised means that you say “Yes” to the gift of God’s love and guidance in their life. It means that you commit to praying for them and helping them to live well. 

It also means that the church - and everyone in it - commits to pray for you and your child.  

It is a time when the priest who baptises your child will bless them and pray for them, welcoming them into the church. 

Baptism as an Adult 

Whenever it happens, whether as a baby, child or adult, baptism is at the heart of an amazing journey of faith as a follower of Jesus Christ. You are never too old to take this step, and being baptised as an adult is a wonderful experience.  

Before the ceremony itself, we may invite you to some baptism preparation sessions where we explore our faith and what it means to live as a Christian.  

The baptism ceremony usually takes place in the main Sunday service where family and friends will be made welcome.  

How much does it cost? 

Baptism is a gift.

The church believes baptism is a gift to us, to enable us to grow closer to God and so there is no charge for baptisms. 

Getting ready 

One of the ministers from the church will come to meet you and your child/children at a time and place that suits you.

If you if you are coming to baptism as an adult we can meet with you and a family member or friend if you prefer.

We will talk through the service with you so that you understand everything that is going to happen.

You can ask any questions you may have, too - and there is no such thing as a silly question!
