Music

Choir

St James the Great supports a small choir that sings at regular services, as well as at weddings and funerals when requested.

There is also an “augmented” choir with members who sing occasionally at larger or special events, including Christmas Carol Services, Easter and festivals.

Music Events

The church is pleased to have been able to support local composer, Liz Dilnot Johnson, with the premier of her work, Requiem for Aleppo in 2017 and also to be part of a 2023 revised composition combing this work with the award-winning “A Child is a Witness” which was commissioned by Ex Cathedra and premiered in Coventry Cathedral.

For more information on this, please visit Liz’s website.

Orchestra

The orchestra started life in 1987 in the Church of the Good Shepherd in Upper Colwall. Four of the original members still play with it..

They generally play at Sunday morning services on special occasions such as Mothering Sunday and Harvest, and also for Carols in the Ale House, leading the hymns and playing a piece at the end, varying in style from Bach to ‘Neighbours’! Practices are normally thirty minutes before the service.

Music can be tailormade to suit your instrument and standard and is available during the week up to the service. You also have the opportunity to join in concerts in church.

This is a great opportunity to contribute to the service, make friends and develop your playing, whether you are young or young at heart, we welcome you.

Church Organ

Colwall’s organ is purported to have been built by Nicholson, but there is no builder’s mark or year of construction to confirm this. Further information on the organ can be found on a Dutch website: https://www.orgelsite.nl/colwall-church-of-saint-james-the-great/
